The hip-hop community lost one of its pioneers with the death of Jam Master Jay (Jason Mizell) who was shot and killed Oct 30, 2002 in his Brooklyn Recording studio...

Tom Dowd, a Grammy-winning music producer and recording engineer whose résumé provided a virtual roadmap of pop, rock, jazz and R&B music over the past half century, died October 27, 2002. He was 77. Dowd worked with such recording legends as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, John Coltrane, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers. In 1947, he applied his knowledge of physics to disc recording, and went on to build the first stereo and eight-track recording consoles at Atlantic Records in 1954. Dowd's achievement was credited with revolutionizing the way that music was recorded...

Other Passings - British Producer Gus Dudgeon - best noted for his work with Elton John as well as Sting and Eric Clapton, died in a car accident in the U.K. July 22, 2002... Billboard Editor in Chief Timothy White died June 27th, 2002 at the magazine's New York offices; he was fifty years old...

Hank Ballard, the singer and songwriter whose hit "The Twist" ushered a nationwide dance craze in the 1960s. Ballard, who was suffering from throat cancer and died at his home. Friend and caretaker Anna Ayala said Ballard's birth records indicate he was born in 1927, but biographical information lists his birthdate as 1936. In 1958, Ballard wrote and recorded "The Twist," but it was only released on the "B" side of a record. In 1960, Chubby Checker debuted his own version of "The Twist" on Dick Clark's Philadelphia television show. It soon topped the charts and launched a dance craze that prompted the creation of other Twist songs...
